About the Cosmos

The Cosmos are a rising U12 boys travel soccer team that plays in the National Capitol Soccer League. We are affiliated with Burke Athletic Club (Burke AC). The Cosmos are dedicated to developing soccer players

The team is coached by Lou King, who has coached travel soccer for 6 years and holds a USSF "D" license. The Cosmos' paid professional trainer is Todd Spitalny, a former college, high school and Virginia ODP coach who has worked with many travel teams in Northern Virginia.

For details on the team, read the questions and answers below. If you have any other questions, please contact Lou King (703-440-9484).

What is the team's practice schedule?

The Cosmos typically practice three times per week: Two 1.5-hour sessions focusing on team tactics and small-sided games, and a 1-hour session focusing on individual footskills. We also expect each player to put in time on his own during off-practice days to further the development of his skills.

How can my son make the team?

The team is open to boys born on or after August 1, 1996. Here is what we're looking for:

Athleticism and speed
A desire to develop soccer skills
Aggressiveness and a willingness to compete
Commitment to work hard and give maximum effort

Travel soccer is competitive, so we are looking for kids who like to compete. Soccer skill, although desireable, is not a requisite. We believe we can take athletic kids who play hard no matter what the sport and give them the foundation to become good soccer players. Travel soccer is a contact sport, so players must be willing to be aggressive and physical.

If your son is interested, please contact Lou King (703-440-9484).

How much will it cost?

Each player will pay a registration fee to Burke Athletic Club (about $135), which will cover all club and league registration fees and the state player pass processing fee. Each player will pay a share of the fee for any tournament we enter. We plan to play in two pre-season tournaments. Players must also buy a uniform.

Fees for Fall 2008 are not final, but here's a rough estimate:

Burke AC registration: $135
Trainer fee: $375
Uniform: $100
Tournament fee: $1200 (approximate total for two tournaments; each players pays a share)

What time commitment is expected?

We expect players to attend and be on time for all practice/training sessions and games. Games are typically played on Sundays, and tournaments will take up an entire weekend. Practices will be held in the Burke, VA area. The practice schedule is subject to change during the season. Please be flexible.

We also expect players to work on their own to continue developing their skills on off days.

Please do a little forward planning and see what potential conflicts you may have. Once the NCSL schedules are set, they will not change. Tournament schedules are also inflexible.

In the NCSL we will be playing teams from all over the D.C. area, so you can expect to have to travel as far as Fredricksburg, VA or Frederick, MD for away games. We will play our home games in Burke, VA.
